Anthropic files to go public, with about 100 pages of risks
Follow-up to Saturday Oct 24: Bubble talk grows as Anthropic's IPO gets closeRemember Saturday's token on bubble talk before Anthropic's IPO? The filing is now public. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, filed its S-1 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. An S-1 is the big document a company must publish before it sells shares to the public. It was the top story on Hacker News, with 1,613 points.
Anthropic plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker "ANT", ahead of OpenAI. The document is 335 pages, and about 100 pages are about risks. TechCrunch reports soaring revenue, mounting losses, and an unusual structure built to keep founder control and protect the company's safety mission. More than half of its customers paying $100,000 or more use both the Claude Platform and one of Anthropic's own apps. The Verge also notes the filing admits data centers depend more and more on natural gas.
The filing says Anthropic wants to "revolutionize every area of human endeavor" with AI. Now investors will decide if that promise is worth the losses.
This is the first big AI lab asking the public to buy in, and the filing shows how much power and energy this race needs. A company that writes 100 pages of risks while promising to change everything deserves a careful read of both parts.
