Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 22, 2026 (analytics added)
The AI Daily Grind is a small, free daily newsletter and website about AI news. We collect as little personal information as we can. This page explains, in simple words, what we collect, why, and your rights.
1. Who we are
The AI Daily Grind is run by François Gravel, in Québec, Canada.
- Person in charge of personal information (Québec Law 25): François Gravel
- Contact: [email protected]
- Postal address: PO Box 8535 STN B, Montréal QC H3B 3J7, Canada
2. What we collect
- Your email address, only if you subscribe.
- Proof of your consent: the date you subscribed, the date you confirmed, and the consent text you agreed to. The law asks us to keep this proof.
- Server logs: like every website, our server writes down basic visit information (IP address, browser type, page visited, time). We use it only for security and to fix problems.
- An anonymous visit counter (see section 3c): the page, the day and your country. No cookies, no IP address kept.
- Visit statistics, only if you accept (see section 3b).
We do not use ads or advertising pixels. We do not track if you open our emails. We do not sell or rent your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
3. Why we use it (legal basis)
- To send you The AI Daily Grind: because you gave your express consent (Canada's CASL, Québec Law 25, PIPEDA, and the GDPR in Europe and the UK). You can withdraw it any time.
- Server logs: to keep the site safe and working (our legitimate interest under the GDPR).
3b. Cookies and visit statistics (Google Analytics)
When you first visit, a small banner asks if we can count visits. Nothing is tracked and no cookie is set until you click "Accept". If you click "Decline", we do not load Google Analytics at all.
If you accept, Google Analytics 4 places cookies (_ga and _ga_*, kept up to 14 months) and measures, without your name or email: pages you view, how long, which stories you listen to or share, if you subscribe, your approximate city and country, your device and browser, and the site or newsletter that brought you here. Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses. We turned off Google signals and ad personalization, and we never use this data for ads.
We use it only to understand which stories are useful, and to make the site better. You can change your choice at any time with Cookie settings (also at the bottom of every page). Links in our emails and shared posts have small labels (like utm_source=newsletter) so we know where visits come from; they do not identify you.
3c. Our anonymous visit counter
To know how many people read the Grind and from which countries, our own server counts page views. It does not use cookies and stores nothing in your browser. For each view it keeps only: the page, the day, and your country (given by Cloudflare). To count each visitor once per day, it makes a fingerprint from your IP address, your browser type and a random secret that changes every day; the old secret is erased, so the fingerprint can never be linked back to you or to another day. Your IP address itself is never stored. These counts stay on our server, are only seen by us, and are kept for about 13 months.
4. Who helps us (service providers)
We use a few trusted providers. They process data only for us, under their data protection terms:
- Cloudflare (USA): website delivery and security, and sending our emails.
- Google Cloud (USA): the server that hosts the website and the subscriber list.
- GitHub (USA): stores the website code and the published news. It holds no subscriber data.
- Google Analytics (Google LLC, USA): visit statistics, only if you accept cookies.
- Google Gemini (USA): makes the AI voice from the published text. It receives no personal data.
Data outside Québec and Canada: these providers are in the United States. Before using them, we checked that they protect personal information properly (as Québec Law 25 asks). For people in Europe and the UK, transfers rely on the providers' Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
5. How long we keep it
- Subscribers: until you unsubscribe. When you unsubscribe, we delete your email address right away.
- Unconfirmed sign-ups: deleted after 7 days.
- Server logs: about 14 days.
- Google Analytics data: 14 months, then deleted automatically.
6. Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- see the information we have about you (access),
- correct it,
- delete it,
- get a copy of it (portability),
- stop sending you emails (withdraw your consent): use the Unsubscribe link in any email.
Write to us at the contact above. We answer within 30 days. If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to:
- Québec: Commission d'accès à l'information
- Canada: Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
- European Union: your country's data protection authority
- United Kingdom: the Information Commissioner's Office
California residents (CCPA/CPRA): we do not sell or share your personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising. You have the rights listed above, and we will not treat you differently if you use them.
7. Emails
We only email people who subscribed and confirmed by clicking a link (double opt-in). Every email says who sends it, includes our postal address, and has a one-click unsubscribe link. We stop sending right away when you unsubscribe (the law allows up to 10 business days).
8. Children
The AI Daily Grind is not made for children. Do not subscribe if you are under 16.
9. Security
We use HTTPS everywhere, keep the subscriber list on a private server, and limit who can access it. If a security problem puts your information at risk, we will tell you and the authorities, as the law requires.
10. Changes
If we change this policy, we update the date at the top. For important changes, we tell subscribers by email.
