Microsoft Research's AI Frontiers group comes to an end

Microsoft Research is the big research lab of Microsoft. A blog post on hunch.net announced the end of its AI Frontiers group. It was the most-voted AI story on Hacker News today, with 456 points and 276 comments. A second link to the same post got 81 points.

Our sources do not say why the group closed or what happens to its researchers. So treat this as a signal, not a full story yet.

Why it matters

Research groups that publish openly give the world a view that is not tied to selling a product. When they close, more of AI's direction is set inside product teams racing each other. We do not know the reasons here, but the question is worth asking.
