Binance hack: a fake job offer and an AI tool
A fake job offer. An AI tool. $6.3 billion gone.
📖 What it is
On October 29, hackers took about $6.3 billion from Binance. Binance's own AI tool helped them go deeper.
🔎 The facts
- June: an engineer downloaded a fake installer for an AI coding tool. Binance caught it, but the hackers learned who ran the wallets.
- September: a fake recruiter interviewed another engineer, then sent a coding assignment that hid malware.
- October 20: they used that computer and an internal AI tool to take over two more machines. Nine days later, they reached the system that approves transfers.
- Was AI the attacker? No evidence so far, says a crypto tracking firm. The FBI blames North Korea.
🗣️ My take
Nobody broke the AI. They used it. An AI helper with the keys to your systems is a door. Treat it like an administrator account.
Why it matters
Never run a test from a recruiter. And if the AI helper has the keys, who is watching the helper?
