What is Model Context Protocol?
📖 The slightly longer version
Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is an open standard. A standard is a shared set of rules that everybody agrees to follow. Anthropic introduced MCP in 2024 so AI apps can connect to outside tools and data in the same way every time. Without it, each AI app needs its own special connection for each tool.
It has two sides. An "MCP server" is a small program that offers tools, like "read my calendar" or "tap this button on the phone". An "MCP client" is the AI app that uses those tools. When you ask for something, the AI sees the list of tools, picks one, and the server does the real action. Voilà: the chatbot becomes an agent, a program that acts for you.
How an AI uses a tool through MCP
- You askYou tell the AI app what you want done.
- AI sees toolsThe app asks connected MCP servers which tools they offer.
- AI picks oneThe AI chooses a tool and sends a request in the shared format.
- Server actsThe server does the real action, like tapping a button on a phone.
- Result comes backThe answer returns to the AI, which tells you or takes the next step.
In today's story, Poki uses MCP to let AI agents operate a real iPhone, running on your own machine. That shows how easy it is now to give an AI real hands: one connector, and it can tap, type and open apps on your phone. Easy to plug in also means easy to give too much power, on the same day we read about agents leaking passwords and reaching for keys.
⚠️ What to watch out for
MCP is only a plug. It does not check whether a tool is safe, or whether the AI should use it right now. A server from a stranger can do anything its code allows, and an AI can be tricked by text it reads into using a tool in the wrong way. Give each connection the smallest access it needs, and test it on things you can afford to lose.
