The public pushes back: bad for society, and banned in Sweden

A new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll says most Americans think AI is bad for society. Most also oppose building more data centers.

In Sweden, public radio reports that government offices will ban ChatGPT and Claude. The report does not give all the reasons in our sources.

Energy is part of the debate. A Swedish AI company, Berget, says the same AI request emits 8.5 times more CO2 in Texas than in Sweden, because of how the electricity is made. That is a company press release, so take it as one view.

Why it matters

The companies are racing ahead, but the public is not following. When people say no to data centers and governments say no to chatbots, the industry may have to slow down and listen.
