Take back your smart TV with open source

Two projects trending on GitHub want to free your TV from ads. Free My TV gained more than 4,000 stars in its first days. It gives Google TV, LG webOS and Samsung Tizen a fast home screen with no ads, and one button to undo.

TV Detox, with about 1,400 stars, helps make an old Android TV fast again. It includes a small ad-free home screen and a prompt for AI coding tools like Claude Code or Codex to clean up the TV.

The timing is interesting. A Reddit post on Hacker News claims a hacker found on-board AI listening on a Samsung TV. That claim is not confirmed.

Why it matters

Smart TVs collect data and push ads in our homes. These tools give normal people some control back, and show AI helping users, not only companies.
