OpenAI eyes a 2027 IPO, and doubts about Anthropic's $1.5 trillion
Follow-up to Wednesday Nov 4: Anthropic's filing: huge payroll, worse margins, and AI debt keeps climbingUpdate on Wednesday's look at Anthropic's IPO filing, with its huge payroll and worse margins. Two new signals came this week. At a Wall Street Journal conference on Wednesday, OpenAI president Greg Brockman said the company could be ready for an IPO in 2027. An IPO is when a company sells shares to the public on the stock market.
Brockman also said OpenAI is gaining ground with businesses, where Anthropic got in first. Separately, the WSJ reports that major investors are skeptical that Anthropic's IPO can reach a $1.5 trillion valuation. We only have the headline, so we do not know who these investors are or their numbers.
All this lands in a week when tech stocks fell on AI worries after the election.
Once a lab has shareholders, it must show growth every quarter, and safety work is slow and does not show up in revenue. So when profit and safety pull in different directions, who decides? Credit where it is due: Anthropic's long filing does put its risks in public.
