The New York Times sues Brave over AI scraping
The fight over who can use the news to feed AI has a new front. The New York Times and other publications are suing Brave, the company behind the privacy-focused web browser. The group includes the New York Daily News and the Chicago Tribune.
They say Brave scraped their copyrighted content to train AI and passed it to its own customers, like Anthropic and Perplexity. They also say Brave let users get around their paywalls. These are claims in a lawsuit, first reported by Reuters; Brave's answer is not in our sources.
On Saturday, we saw big labs agree to honour a shared 'no AI training' signal in robots.txt. This lawsuit shows the other path: the courts.
If the publishers win, AI companies and their data suppliers may have to pay for the news they use. If they lose, the paywalls that keep many newsrooms alive get weaker.
