Anthropic's IPO price slips, OpenAI raises at $1.25 trillion

Follow-up to Friday Nov 6: OpenAI eyes a 2027 IPO, and doubts about Anthropic's $1.5 trillion

Update on Friday's doubts about Anthropic's $1.5 trillion valuation. Bloomberg reports that IPO buyers now see a valuation as low as $1.1 trillion, after the AI stock rout. The story got 281 points and 556 comments on Hacker News. A smaller site says talks dropped to $1.3 trillion; treat that number with more care.

OpenAI goes the other way. Bloomberg says it raised another $11 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation. The round is not closed yet and is expected to close in the coming weeks. In March, OpenAI raised $122 billion at $852 billion.

The spending data is mixed. Ramp's data shows AI usage still climbing, but spending has stalled, as price cuts and cost controls kick in. Menlo Ventures, discussed on The AI Daily Brief, says companies spend nearly five times more than last year, driven by agents.

Why it matters

For me this is a risk story, not a money story. When a lab sells shares and its price is under pressure, who wins the argument: the safety team or the shareholders? Anthropic's detailed filing deserves credit for transparency, but markets reward speed, and speed is the problem.
